20 Recent Movies WAY Better Than They Had Any Right To Be
11. Deep Water
Renny Harlin may be the man behind such '90s action hits as Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, and Deep Blue Sea, but he's fallen off hard in the 25+ years since, his subsequent career defined by a string of critical and commercial flops.
So expectations were through the floor for his new survival film Deep Water, even though it touted quite the irresistible premise - an international flight crashes into the Pacific Ocean, and because that's not disastrous enough, the survivors find themselves circled by hungry sharks.
But apparently all it took was for Harlin to return to the shark movie to deliver his best film since Deep Blue Sea. This is an unapologetically daft but modestly entertaining B-movie that knows exactly what it is and delivers accordingly.
Harlin's filmmaking hasn't felt this alive in quite some time, serving up a number of genuinely diverting, suspenseful set-pieces and largely delivering on what anyone could reasonably expect from the outlandish premise.
