20 Recent Movies WAY Better Than They Had Any Right To Be

Let's be real - a micro-budget horror film set in a single location with just two on-screen actors, centered around a podcaster listening to haunted audio no less, doesn't sound like the most enthralling genre romp on paper, does it?

But Ian Tuason's feature debut Undertone isn't your typical no-budget horror joint - it's an expertly crafted mood exercise which, while not for all tastes, is one of the most uniquely creepy horror films of the year so far.

By hermetically sealing the audience inside protagonist Evy's (Nina Kiri) house, we're effectively locked in alongside her, and if you had the pleasure of watching the film on the big screen, you'll know how joltingly immersive Undertone's tactile sound design is.

Nina Kiri gives a remarkable performance in the lead role, all while Tuason proves what can be pulled off when a smart filmmaker gets creatively thrifty with their minimal resources.

As such it's little surprise that Tuason has since been hired to direct the next Paranormal Activity movie.
