When it was announced that pop star Charli XCX was starring as a fictionalised version of herself in a music mockumentary about her career, many saw the potential for an embarrassingly self-indulgent misfire.

And while The Moment's reality-blurring throughline definitely won't be for everyone, it's a far stranger, more inventive project than you might expect from a seemingly navel-gazing vanity project.

For one, Charli gives a surprisingly sturdy, nuanced performance as a probably-not-so-fictional iteration of herself, and the film finds a unique space to explore the perils of pop stardom in a modern context, all while capturing the inherent absurdity of a successful musician's daily life.

It's hardly surprising that The Moment got little attention outside of its star's most dedicated fanbase, but you needn't be a fan to get something out of this.

As music mockumentaries go, it's a worthy, left-field addition to the canon best defined by the likes of This Is Spinal Tap and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.
