SXSW 2022: 20 Movies You Need To Know About

15. Deadstream

Creatively bereft though the found footage genre might seem these days, Vanessa and Joseph Winter's Deadstream breathes fresh life into it with an energetic, hilarious take centered around one "cancelled" livestreamer's (Joseph Winter) desperate attempt to win his followers back by spending a night in a haunted house.

You know exactly where it's going, but the Winters do a marvelous job of both subverting found footage expectations and using cutting edge livestream tech to execute a few deliciously unexpected thrills.

If audiences are prepared to put up with the film's wilfully obnoxious protagonist, this is a mile-a-minute entry into the exhausted subgenre, melding gross-out humour with genuinely unnerving scares.

Deadstream will release on Shudder later this year.
