Terminator: Dark Fate – 7 Big Things We Learned From The Trailer

4. The Film Is (Somewhat) More Grounded Than Previous Terminator Movies

If there is one thing that previous Terminator sequels have in common, it's that they have lost sight of what made the first two (and, to a lesser extent, the third) standout. The franchise was never supposed to be about the future war or the incredibly convoluted time-travel stories that came with it. No, their real strength lay in the fact that they were expertly able to capture the genuine thrill of the chase which, as the first film highlighted, can be accomplished on an incredibly small scale.

While Terminator: Dark Fate doesn't appear to have fully grasped that notion (notice the huge in-your-face airplane scene), it does seem to have somewhat of a handle on it as it is a lot less, for lack of a better term, hectic than the previous two entries.

Gone are the endless explosions of the war that was never meant to happen, as well as the head-scratching time-travel logic that came with them, and in their place is a remotely grounded story centred on a new family as they do whatever it takes to survive. That, for the time being at least, seems like a start.
