10 Biggest Box Office Bombs Of 2015 (So Far)
7. Mortdecai
Estimated Losses: $40-50m
Another year, another box office bomb starring Johnny Depp. Once regarded as one of the finest talents of his generation, the actor has seemed increasingly content to coast by in a series of roles that simply require him to open up the dress-up box and phone in his performance, an unfortunate streak that continued with the terrible Mortdecai.
Based on the relatively obscure series of novels, Mortdecai the movie is a self-satisfied and painfully unfunny romp that was surely a lot more fun to shoot than it was to sit through. A great cast that features Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Paul Bettany and Jeff Goldblum are clearly having a ball, but the whole thing comes off as far too smug and self-indulgent to appeal to anybody else.
Depp's box office losing streak continued when Mortdecai grossed just $4.2m during its domestic opening, and suffered one of the biggest theater drops in history when in its third weekend it went from playing on over 2600 screens to just 253. Ending its domestic run with an embarrassing $7.7m, the movie earned just over $30m worldwide, roughly half of the production budget and further accelerating Johnny Depp's rapid descent down the A-list.
