The Batman: 10 Characters The Arkham Asylum TV Show Should Introduce

2. Martin "Mad Dog" Hawkins

Arkham Asylum has a twisted history and, if the show wants to explore that, it would be wise to include Martin Hawkins.

A disturbed serial killer, Hawkins claimed to see visions of the Virgin Mary. The man began murdering women in horrific ways, under the belief he was doing the work of the saint.

After his arrest, Martin Hawkins was institutionalized at the Metropolis State Psychiatric Hospital, put under the care of Amadeus Arkham. When Amadeus returned home to Gotham to open Arkham Asylum, Hawkins escaped, hunting down the doctor and murdering his family. The Mad Dog was soon recaptured, this time sentenced to Arkham Asylum. It was there that Amadeus killed him, subjecting him to extreme electroshock therapy.

Martin Hawkins was the push that sent Amadeus on a downward spiral, exasperating preexisting mental illness and sending the founder of the asylum into insanity.

Although it's presumed this show will take place in modern time, Matt Reeves has talked about the rich history of the asylum and how he wants to bring it to life. Hawkins could appear in a flashback, highlighting the early tragedies of the asylum. If Reeves wanted to, he could go a different route and bring in an aged Hawkins, spared from murder yet tortured by Amadeus throughout the years. Keeping the character alive would bring a fresh, unseen dynamic between the Mad Dog and the new warden, Jeremiah Arkham.
