The Batman: 10 Things We Need To See In Matt Reeves' Reboot

8. The Criminal Underworld

Nolan did a fantastic job in making Gotham feel as realistic and grounded as possible. His focus on Batman’s crusade against mob families before his battle with supervillains was a wonderful way to build up Gotham City as a living, breathing entity, and not just a backdrop.

However, the criminal underworld element of Gotham is diverse and offers more than just being a low-level nuisance, or stepping stone to greater heights. Major villains in Batman’s rogues gallery are tied to the criminal underworld - most notably, Black Mask and the Penguin. The former ran a unified crime organization, encompassing all of Gotham’s criminal families and syndicates, while the latter deals in information, weapons, and stolen goods from the cover of his night club.

While supervillains go away periodically to Arkham, the street-level crime is a constant, and the reason Batman goes out on patrol every single night. Thankfully, with the Birds of Prey film in development, we might get a chance to see some of these elements in the works.

Finally bringing to screen Black Mask, and introducing the Huntress, the daughter born into a prominent Gotham mafia family, there’s a hope that some of these elements will bleed into The Batman and future projects.
