What made Thanos so compelling in Avengers: Infinity War was the sympathetic way he was scripted and portrayed. The screenwriters and performance made you care about the villain, even though he was hell-bent on wiping out half the universe. While the unquantifiable chaos brought about by a character like the Joker is great fun, a similar, sympathetic approach would greatly benefit the cinematic world of Gotham, especially as many of Batman’s rivals have sympathetic aspects to them.

At this point, filmgoers have seen a lot from Batman: his physical conditioning, his struggle with duality, and his trouble balancing romance with being a vigilante. It would we worth downplaying some of these elements in favour of providing more substance to a villain, making their story equally as compelling as Batman’s.

There are a handful of characters that could fill this kind of role, but more on that later . . .
