The Batman: Every Character Ranked From Worst To Best
7. Alfred Pennyworth
What would any Batman be without the Dark Knight's trusty aide Alfred? Here we fittingly get a younger take on the character, as played with steely relish by the great Andy Serkis.
Alfred isn't in the movie all that much, but as usual for the character he's massively ambivalent about Bruce's crime-fighting endeavours, and feels the crushing weight of serving as Bruce's guardian following his parents' deaths.
He's certainly not the most developed character in the film, but flecks of backstory do flesh him out nicely, namely his previous experience working in British Intelligence allowing him to figure out parts of the Riddler's ciphers.
For a moment it seemed like Matt Reeves was going to make the bold decision to kill Alfred off after he intercepts a letter bomb sent to Bruce, though he thankfully survives.
Despite his commitment to Bruce, however, Alfred is ultimately revealed to have kept the full extent of Thomas Wayne's imperfect past a secret, and also the probability that he was killed by Carmine Falcone.
This drives a major schism between Bruce and Alfred later in the story, lending shade and dimension to Alfred even though, again, he has a relatively small part. Regardless, the sequel will hopefully foster that relationship considerably more.
