The Batman Movie Review: 8 Ups & 2 Downs

4. Greig Fraser's Oscar-Worthy Cinematography

The Batman

In addition to Matt Reeves' pin-sharp direction, this is a phenomenally photographed movie, courtesy of Oscar-nominated cinematographer Greig Fraser (Dune).

Compositionally this is by far the most thoughtfully, artfully filmed Batman movie, for while it doesn't match the epic scope of Nolan's Dark Knight Saga, it isn't even remotely trying to.

Instead, Fraser immerses us in the grimy alleys and seedy clubs of Gotham, with occasional glimpses of the sun-kissed skyline.

There's also far less camera movement here than is typical for the genre, allowing the audience to drink each scene in without spatial confusion, as is especially key during the film's lavishly staged action sequences.

Fraser, who is currently nominated for a Best Cinematography Oscar for his work on Dune, could very well find himself nominated again next year for The Batman, because his lensing on this film is utterly breathtaking.
