The Batman Sequel: 10 Possible Villains (And Who Should Play Them)
1. Ra’s Al Ghul – Mads Mikkelsen
Mads Mikkelsen has already been wasted in one comic-book role on the big screen, let’s make sure it doesn’t happen again. Thus, the possibility of the dynamic Dane taking on the role of Matt Reeves’ own Ra’s al Ghul would certainly be a step in the right direction of ensuring history doesn’t repeat itself.
Mikkelsen is a wonderful actor - capable of conquering both indie films and blockbuster franchises - and falls into a rare bracket of stars who can steal a scene without uttering a syllable. Wizards, stormtroopers, and more wizards are just a handful of the worlds Mads has occupied, and with great success.
His stint as Hannibal was built upon the foundations of his relationship with Hugh Dancy’s Will Graham, and Mikkelsen could implement a similar situation with Pattinson’s Batman should he play the latter’s ultimate nemesis. Stylistically, he ticks a range of boxes needed to incorporate someone of The Demon's status and comic-book infamy. Armed with eternal knowledge and everlasting life, Ra's is a true conductor of chaos who sees the Caped Crusader as his picture-perfect adversary.
With The Batman introducing Pattinson’s iteration during his second year of vigilantism, al Ghul’s introduction to audiences would not be far-fetched in having the character play his part in Bruce’s earlier escapades before the events of the film. Mads is Hollywood’s go-to bad guy, and his filmography showcases characters who can back up their words with actions coinciding with Ra’s philosophy.
A match made in heaven? Absolutely.
