The Biggest Mistake Each DCEU Film Has Made
6. Suicide Squad: The Fantastically Dire Screenplay
Suicide Squad is probably the worst DCEU film to date. It's surprisingly well-acted (aside from Jared Leto's mediocre Joker and Cara Delevingne's embarrassingly awful villain) and this keeps it at the two-star level, but for the most part it is a truly terrible film.
Aside from the godawful editing, messy directing and over-use of pop music, the main mistake of Suicide Squad was the ghastly script. It has a couple of nice moments and flashes of potential - for example, a scene with the squad in the bar is actually rather good - but these parts only make how bad the rest of the script is even more frustrating.
There's no tension or character development here, while there's also little in the way of substance or logic. Most of the plot doesn't make any sense at all and the entire thing is a shallow, empty and stunningly ugly train-wreck. It's also a bit of mystery as to why David Ayer was hired to do the film given that he's been involved in so many terrible movies at this point.
All in all, Suicide Squad proves once again that without a good-enough script, a film really is dead on arrival.
