The Blair Witch Project: 7 Most Compelling Fan Theories

2. Josh Lured Heather And Mike

Blair Witch Secret
Artisan Entertainment

Assuming that there really is something supernatural stalking the trio, it is made clear quite early on that Josh has been singled out. It's Josh's belongings that are strewn across the campsite and covered in the mysterious slime. It's also worth noting that despite being the peace-keeper and the most level-headed, laid back member of the group initially, he's the one who uncharacteristically snaps as their situation gets more desperate.

Though the other two gradually become more hostile towards each other in a way that is understandable, believable and in keeping with their established personalities, Josh almost seems to transform into a completely different person. His aggression towards Heather, in particular, feels a lot more sinister than simply the frustrations of someone frightened, tired and hungry. In other words, he appears possessed.

Is he under the Blair Witch's influence like Rustin Parr before him? Or instead, expanding on the previous theory, is Josh possessed by the murderous spirit of Parr himself?

The acting all-round is phenomenal in this film, but Joshua Leonard's performance might just be the strongest of the three leads, mainly because of how he handles the tensions leading up to his character's disappearance. Is Josh possessed by something supernatural? Or is he handling their situation worse than his companions and has simply reached breaking point? He plays it perfectly in such a way that either is equally believable.
