The Conjuring 2 Review: 6 Ups And 2 Downs
1. The Failed British Trappings
In the requisite pre-screening intro, James Wan seemed positively giddy about the prospect of making a film set in England, playing a part in a pretty illustrious historical legacy. He really shouldn't have made such a point of it in a showing in London though, because where The Conjuring 2 really misses its mark is with its presentation of just everything to do with the British way of life.
After the moody Amityville opening, we jump to Enfield with London Calling blaring out over stock footage of red buses and it's all downhill from there. Rain comes in sudden bursts and everybody eats piles of biscuits before bedtime. The Hodgsons are in serious money troubles, yet their council house is incredibly spacious (and oddly of a similar layout to the house in the original). Incredibly tense sequences are derailed by some shocking deaf approximations of a cockney accent.
Some period and location flubs are permissable, but when the movie makes such a point of them, especially one so built on maintaining atmosphere, it weakens everything a little.
