The Dark Knight Rises: 20 Blunders in Chris Nolan’s Trilogy

5. Where Were All the Gadgets?!

Ok, so I€™ll admit that this might be nit-picking now, but I can€™t help feel that Nolan€™s franchise brushed quickly over Batman€™s reliance on gadgetry. It€™s by far one of the cooler elements of the character and I€™ve always felt it€™s just one of the many ways the Dark Knight combats his inherent humanity. In fact if we€™re boiling him down to his power-set, what would you say Batman€™s is in the greater DC Universe? Probably Technology. Nolan€™s Batman of course relies on technology to get by, but the gear he uses seems to be at its lowest common denominator €“ a big ass car, or a stupid looking flying bungalow monstrosity, or a gun that fires energy bolts, or a sticky bomb. What happened to the Grapnel Gun, the Sonic Batarangs, the Line Launcher, the Cryptographic Sequencer, the Bat-Goo Gun? Hell, Nolan put the utility belt on his version of the character and I could be wrong, but I don€™t think I saw him reach in there once. The fact that I don't remember though says it all. Batman Begins started to explore the ingenuity of these clever inventions with the Sonic Bat Call, but the franchise thereafter quickly starts to forget about this fan-favourite aspect of the character. I guess there€™s a fine line between Gadgets and €˜Bat-Mastercard€™ but it€™s a line I€™ve always wished Nolan would have tread just that little more.
