Nolan is often criticized for his movies being too cold and emotionless, lacking that extra bit of heart or vital touch of humour.

Some people struggle to connect with his characters because of this, but when it comes to humour in particular, it's not that Nolan is a detached robot who never smiles or laughs - it's just that he's very careful with how he utilises comedy in his movies.

During the documentary, the director likens his use of humour in Batman Begins to the way it was implemented in Raiders of the Lost Ark, saying "there's a couple of great gags in there [Raiders], but it's not a comedic film".

Basically, he wants his humour to feel as natural and effortless as possible, allowing his characters to act like real people, how they would act in our own reality. Real life isn't consistently funny, after all... as 2020 has finely demonstrated.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
