Sure to be one of the most controversial alterations to the source material here is that young Jake Chambers is quite clearly going to be the point-of-view character who guides the audience through all this insanity.

While many would prefer Elba's Roland to take the reins, the dark, mysterious nature of the character makes him harder for a broad audience to relate to, so instead the movie looks to follow a bizarre 90s teen adventure movie formula by having protagonist Jake discover this new world and bring Roland back into his own.

While it makes commercial sense to have a young, relatable audience surrogate, it will have to be delicately executed in order to convince fans of the novels, even if this is being touted as something of a tangential, loose adaptation.
