The Death Of Superman Review: 5 Ups & 6 Downs

2. There's Occasional Unintentional Hilarity

The Death Of Superman Clark Lois
Warner Bros.

Tying into that previous note about the film's odd, wavering tone, there are some moments that just don't land the way they're intended.

Of all the serious moments that are more likely to leave audiences giggling, Clark revealing his true identity to Lois takes the cake. The sequence, set inside a restaurant and performed with absolute solemnity, is ruined by Lois refusing to believe Clark until...he removes his glasses.

Clark's true identity being so obvious has always been a running gag in Superman media, but for this movie to carry it out without even the slightest wink at the audience is just...the worst. It's howlingly off-base and plays a fundamentally ridiculous scene far too earnestly to pass muster. Awful.
