The Death Of Superman Review: 5 Ups & 6 Downs
1. The Wildly Mixed Voice Acting
The vocal performances here are an incredibly mixed bag as they so usually are in DC animated movies. The most peculiar aspect of the acting generally is that despite these films touting talented, well-known actors, the performances so often feel utterly anonymous.
You can argue that's merely a result of the actors "disappearing" into their characters, but that's really not the case at all here. So much of the voice acting here feels like it was the first take the actors recorded, with the performers desperately rushing through their assignment so they can get on with the rest of their day.
Though Jerry O'Connell continues to be a solid Superman, the most egregious misfit here is Rainn Wilson as Lex Luthor: his swivelling, nasal delivery doesn't really work and feels like a distracting casting miscalculation.
Granted, none of the cast are dealing with A+ material, but in some areas a far greater effort was clearly possible.
These not insignificant issues aside, here's what The Death of Superman nevertheless gets right...
