The Dirt Review: 5 Ups & 7 Downs

2. The Key Performances

Considering only Iwan Rheon is massively established of the leading four actors, they're all very impressive. Douglas Booth, Machine Gun Kelly, Daniel Webber and Rheon are all very, very watchable and even when their performances deviate from what long-term fans will recognise of Crue, they're still wholly convincing of a band like that.

Most impressive is that their performances are so on-point at times when the material is no help to them. When you want depth, the material's not there, but they make up for it in other ways. Even when they amount to lookalike performances because of the writing, you're with them enough for it not to always be a problem.

And while there's bound to be a morbid fascination to the more perverse moments from their history, the subtleties of their performances - the observations in small touches and quirks is where they're the most impressive. Special mention, in that respect, has to go to Machine Gun Kelly, a musician himself who has turned to acting and who is an absolutely spot-on Tommy Lee. It's scary at times.
