3. Azmenistan

The final showdown between the Expendables and Stonebanks' personal army takes place in the country of Azmenistan which, you'll probably have guessed, is fictional. Much like the South American island Vilena from the first movie, it has been pulled out of thin air for two reasons: a) to ensure there are no political tensions when releasing the movie in foreign countries and b) because that's how they did it back in the 80s, and we'd expect no different from a throwback flick like this. There's added hilarity, though, when you realise that EX3 isn't the first film to use the fake country Azmenistan. 2008's The Onion Movie centered an entire skit around the escalating war between two fake countries, Sloravia and the Russian-speaking Azmenistan. Though this could just be a coincidence, we like to think that Sly's a huge fan of The Onion and couldn't resist referencing it in a totally obscure way. After all, how many people even know The Onion guys made a movie? But seek it out: it's great.
