The Gentlemen Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs
Ups...
6. It's Guy Ritchie's Best Film In YEARS
The Gentlemen's aforementioned familiarity won't be a problem for many, if only because it's such a relief to see Ritchie back in the filmmaking arena which made him famous in the first place.
And to Ritchie's credit, this is his best film in over a decade - since 2008's Rocknrolla in the very least - serving up a welcome palate cleanser after the back-to-back blockbusters King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and Aladdin.
With a smaller scale and more adult tone - it's his first R-rated film since Rocknrolla, in fact - Ritchie's comfort with the tools at his disposal is evident, and in turn the film is so much more successful as a pure entertainment than anything he's made in recent memory.
With Ritchie already shooting his next film, a Jason Statham-starring heist thriller called Cash Truck, fingers are crossed the directory might be in the midst of a resurgence following a decade of thorough mediocrity.
