The Gentlemen Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

5. Hugh Grant's Scene-Stealing Performance

The Gentlemen Hugh Grant
STXfilms

Make no mistake, the single reason you absolutely should watch this movie is Hugh Grant, who gives a deliriously against-type performance as the tremendously sleazy P.I. Fletcher.

Kitted out in shades with a goatee and ridiculous cockney accent to match, this is wonderfully transformative work from the actor more typically known for playing dapper gents, and he absolutely rises to the challenge.

Grant gets the lion's share of the movie's best one-liners and delivers them with a riveting ferocity even while he's divorced from much of the movie's action.

Instead, he's given the responsibility of rattling through several epic monologues like they're Shakespeare, and he absolutely nails it each and every time.

If nothing else, it's a fantastic reminder of just how versatile Grant can be, and how much more interesting the actor has become in middle-age.
