The Gentlemen Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

4. It's Full Of Hilarious One-Liners

Though Ritchie's script sometimes ventures into misguided territory, when it works, it really works.

The best dialogue in the movie isn't just overly verbose or excessively crude for its own sake, but has an entertainingly heightened, theatrical quality to it that means it couldn't really belong to anyone but Ritchie.

The written word combines with the game work of the film's cast to ensure that the pithy one-liners are frequently hilarious, especially those fielded out by Hugh Grant and Colin Farrell.

Even when the plot is at its most absurdly contrived, the dialogue is fun and inspired enough to maintain interest, and in tandem with the performances, easily the film's strongest suit.
