15 Greatest Character Names In American Film History

13. John Matrix ("Commando")

Mark L. Lester's "Commando" is pretty much a worthless film. Even for the standards of 1980's action, it's not constructed with much intelligence or sophistication. However, as far as pure entertainment value counts; it suffices. As one of the earliest productions designed as a vehicle for young Mr. Schwarzenegger it presents lots of the trademark ingredients audiences would later associate with the Austrian Hulk. One example of this is of course the name of Arnold's character: Delta Force Operative Colonel John Matrix. Having heard the complete title of his, you know exactly everything that you need to know about him. He's obviously experienced in the art of warfare; a man to fear and respect. He's a Colonel, which means that he's also a leader and have risen through the ranks during his career. His first name; John, suggests that in spite of all of this apparent aptitude for violence, he has the potential of being a caring and well-meaning everyman - in the film this is further proved by his innocent love for his daughter (especially in the scene when the daughter forcefully stuffs her ice-cream into her father€™s laughing mouth). His surname, however; Matrix, makes sure that the name sticks on our tongues. It's a surname that oozes with 80's cheesiness and machismo. Seriously, are we expected to believe that this is a valid surname for anyone on this planet? No, of course not. But within the ludicrousness of the film's setting, we accept it. It's part of the fun.
