15 Greatest Character Names In American Film History
12. Frank Bullitt ("Bullitt")
Steve McQueen; the epitome of cool. This actor was (and still is) so linked with the tough guy-persona he exuded during the 1960's and 70's, that his considerable acting talent sadly was always slightly overlooked. McQueen's persona which often presented itself through externally untouchable and irrevocable tough characters, at the same time always displayed a male sensibility, which at that time really had no predecent. This would later undoubtedly inspire modern action heroes. Think of Ryan Gosling's performance in "Drive", which for all intents and purposes, really was nothing else than a post modern nod to Steve McQueen. And one need only look at Daniel Craig's take on James Bond to realize that McQueen was and still is a major influence on today's action stars. Anyway, one of the films for which Steve McQueen is still most remembered is Peter Yates' 1968 crime classic "Bullitt". In this film McQueen portrays the archetype for the good-hearted but controversial cop. You do not want to cross this man. He's sharp as a bullet; hence the name. Or as the tagline for the film so aptly put it: "There are bad cops and there are good cops - and then there's Bullitt".
