The Grinch Review: 3 Ups & 6 Downs

3. Max Steals The Show

Illumination sure knows how to endear cute characters to the audience, and for all of its faults, The Grinch is no exception.

The Grinch's canine pal Max is the easy highlight of the movie, wrestling the film away from the titular attraction and ultimately proving a far more entertaining character.

Sure, the majority of his screen time is spent on sight gags, but for the most part they're a little less wacky and more reliant on the character's facial expressions and body language (he doesn't speak, you see).

Given Illumination's success with The Secret Life of Pets, it shouldn't be too surprising they know a thing or two about creating charming animal characters, even if Max is ultimately deserving of a far better movie.
