Radagast didn't appear in Tolkien's the Hobbit, instead he was a character who briefly appeared in the Fellowship of the Ring. Nevertheless Peter Jackson's choice to include him wasn't necessarily a bad one. Tolkien described him as a Wizard who'd become overly distracted with nature, to the point of forgetting his task in defeating Sauron. The fairy-tale nature of the Hobbit made him a fitting character to include, and Sylvester McCoy played the mushroomed addled, forrest-hippie brilliantly.

Having said all that, Jackson introduced him with an overly long chase sequence, that become indicative of the entire trilogies lacklustre momentum.

If there's one thing that doesn't lend itself to Middle-earth, it's a Hollywood chase sequence; Jackson substituted fast cars for wargs and, wait for it... , a rabbit sledge. It was one of those early moments in the trilogy that made your stomach drop. It was indication that Jackson had succumbed to favouring wild spectacle over plot-driven narrative.

Not only was the sequence utterly dull, but it served to make both Tolkien's world and Radagast feel ridiculous.
