The Hobbit: 8 Blunders That Ruined The Desolation Of Smaug

6. An Unnecessary Evil

Along with the Goblins, mysterious Elves, troops of spiders, Trolls, mountain giants that like to fling boulders at each other and a world that itself would have an overly-domesticated Hobbit for breakfast, did we really need a Big Scary Villain to direct our hatred towards? Azog The Defiler is such a villain. A digitally-rendered one at that, and sounding like a fourteen year-olds forum name, he proceeds to take up way too much screen time just being a cipher for antagonism. Big, burly, full of scars and talking almost exclusively in a variety of grunts, Azog€™s inclusion is one of the many things completely made up for the sake of the film, and two movies in we€™re still yet to see him do anything of any worth. His inclusion is to further the eventual revelation that many more events of The Hobbit tie directly into the LOTR trilogy than we thought, yet his €˜character€™ onscreen is incredibly dull to watch, giving off no menace or threat, instead looking like a walking slab of meat we€™re just waiting for Thorin to skewer with a wayward arrow.
