6. Let Us Feel It
The picture above? One of the so-called villains of the movie: Seneca Crane. He is one of my favourite characters because of the depth that he shows throughout the book and film. He is the Gamemaker, and as a result is often viewed as the evil one who kills people's children. And that's sort of true, though in the movie it is shown that he is not technically at fault, and is simply doing what he must by way of circumstance. His murder at the order of President Snow and the subsequent use of his name on a hanging dummy by Katniss in Catching Fire is a crucial part of the series; showing the true levels of cruelty that Snow possesses. It is an interesting dilemma - the extent that this idea should be exploited in a film that is mainly about the teenage pair. For me, though, the portrayal of this character in The Hunger Games was one of its greatest successes. However, there were other scenes that were not as heart-wrenching as I was expecting. Dare I say it: Rue's death. In the book this was one of the most soul destroying scenes for me, and despite the incredible acting of Amandla Stenberg, I just didn't feel it. I don't know what was missing, exactly, though it perhaps ultimately comes down to the fact that Katniss and Rue's relationship just wasn't as developed on film as it was on paper...
