The Incredibles: Is The Sequel Better Than The Original?

2. Villain

Incredibles 2
Pixar

One of the biggest reasons The Incredibles is so popular is because of something quite rare among superhero movies - a strong villain.

In Syndrome we had a smart, witty antagonist, who was self-aware and more than a match for Mr Incredible. If not for Jack-Jack, there is no guarantee that the heroes would have actually won the day. The childhood ties the villain had to Mr Incredible allowed the audience to feel sympathy for Buddy, and added a certain intrigue to their relationship. No matter who the villain for Incredibles 2, they would have some mighty big shoes to fill.

Screenslaver, in this regard, left a lot to be desired. The reveal that it was really Evelyn Deavor behind the villain could be seen a mile away, from as early as the berating of her father for placing his trust in supers, Gazerbeam and Fironic. It was obvious from there that there was something more to the character. And while Elastigirl's battle with Screenslaver aka the pizza guy was incredible to watch, the antagonist was mainly utilised through largely forgetful supers rather than a charismatic personality like Syndrome.
