The LEGO Movie 2 Trailer: 7 Easter Eggs & References You Might Have Missed

When The LEGO Movie came out in 2014 it shocked us all with how good it was - it wasn't just made to sell toys but was funny, profound, and hit us all with a wave of nostalgia. And now they're doing it again.
Several days ago a trailer dropped for The LEGO Movie 2, a post-apocalypse sci-fi sequel that seems just as quirky and fun as the first. So many beloved characters are back, from Emmet and Wyldstyle to some supporting characters, although there's no mention of real humans this time.
Analysing the trailer to try and understand the story would be redundant since Emmet says in the trailer "we're going to save Lucy". Well, there's the spoiler-free synopsis folks.
Far more interesting is the use of pop culture references. They peppered the first movie, especially seeing as most of the master builders were from beloved franchises, and this trailer shows that these references aren't going anywhere. But while Abe Lincoln, Gandalf and Milhouse haven’t been confirmed for the film, many other references have.
In fact, with LEGO acquiring the licensing for newer franchises all the time, it seems like there could be more references through the movie than ever before
7. Planet Of The Apes
The post-apocalypse setting of the trailer seems catered towards one particular reference, to be mentioned later. But one of the first shots we get of this new world is of a toppled Statue of Liberty, covered in scaffolding, and clearly at the center of a building site.
This makes sense - Emmet was a builder (supposedly a 'master' one) and it would make sense for establishing shots of him to show him back at his old job, building.
But the choice to use the Statue of Liberty as the building project is very likely a reference to the Planet of the Apes franchise, particularly the inclusion of it in the original Planet of the Apes film. A damaged Statue of Liberty has become synonymous with that film, and director Mike Mitchell must have known what he was implying when he included it.
