The Lord Of The Rings: 10 Best Characters NOT In The Fellowship

4. King Théoden

Lord Of The Rings Saruman
New Line Cinema

Théoden was a sincere and just king who brought a great sense of quasi-leadership to the forces of men in the last two films. Corrupted by the dark magic of Saruman when we first meet him, he is quickly freed by Gandalf who makes him see the truth of his duplicitous servant Grima Wormtongue.

Théoden would go on to lead the people of Rohan in the War of the Ring and his noble and proud attitude provided a strong contrast to the horrible untrustworthy kings of men that we had heard about up until this point. He inspires his soldiers and his family alike and when the hour is darkest, he makes amazing speeches that will rally the audience as well as the characters.

After surviving the battle of Helm's Deep, he is sadly killed in the battle of Minas Tirith by the Witch-king of Angmar. He is avenged swiftly by his niece Éowyn who he manages to spend his dying moments with. It is a touching and sad death that is one of the most emotional moments in the trilogy.
