The Lord Of The Rings: 10 Most Powerful Swords In Middle-Earth

3. Anglachel/Gurthang

Most people know that the story of Middle-Earth is more vast and deep than even the Mines of Moria. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is barely a splash in the ocean compared to the compendium of the mythology, which is why there are plenty of great swords to note that didn't appear in Jackson's trilogy. So, if Ringil wasn't enough for you, here's another.

Gurthang was a Herculean weapon which belonged to Turin, a tragic hero from The Tale of the Children of Húrin. But, it wasn't his at first, rather it went by the name Anglachel and belonged to Túrin’s friend Beleg. After accidentally slaying his friend, Túrin ended up taking possession of the sword and reforging it. The translated name of Gurthang was the “Iron of Death", fitting for the crimes it committed.

Ultimately, this incredible sword shared a luxury none of the others on this list have, and that's the bragging rights to having killed a dragon. The blade was used to slay the first fire-breathing dragon in Middle-Earth, Glaurung, a massive indication of its power.

Then, to make the sword even more powerful, it even seemed to have a mind of its own, beckoning Túrin to slay himself with it, to which he obliged. A sword that can slay a dragon and its own master is certainly a powerful one.
