The Lord Of The Rings: Ranking Every Major Villain From Worst To Best
8. The Balrog
This fire demon was a frightening adversary for the Fellowship to face whilst in the Mines of Moria. With its ginormous size and similarly large weaponry, it’s easy to see why Gandalf told everyone to run when it first appeared.
As entertaining as it was to hear Ian McKellen deliver the line ‘You shall not pass!’, it was The Two Towers that revealed the full extent of the battle between Gandalf and the Balrog. Though it was entertaining to witness these two titans go against each other, the Balrog was ultimately a villain with an immense spectacle but not much substance.
Sure, The Silmarillion does provide more information, but the Balrog featured in the main trilogy was rather shallow despite how visually intimidating it was.
