The Lord Of The Rings: Ranking Every Major Villain From Worst To Best

7. Sauron

As the creator of the One Ring, Sauron was the titular character of The Lord of the Rings, and despite his limited screen time, he was also the primary antagonist of the trilogy.

However, Sauron only appeared in his physical form during the prologue of The Fellowship of the Ring. Granted, his design was highly distinctive and he was undoubtedly effective during The Battle of Dagorlad, but after being struck down by Isildur, Sauron became more of a peripheral figure.

Thankfully, The Silmarillion delves into the history of Sauron much more thoroughly, but the movie adaptations of The Lord of the Rings never gave much backstory to Sauron. This is understandable given how much other content needed to be translated to the screen.

It’s just a shame that the overarching villain of the trilogy felt marginalised for the most part.
