The Lord Of The Rings: Ranking Every Major Villain From Worst To Best

4. Shelob

Shelob Lord Of The Rings
New Line Cinema

At the top of the Stairs of Cirith Ungol, Shelob gorged herself on anyone attempting to make their way into the Land of Shadow.

Frodo’s time inside Shelob’s lair – also known as Torech Ungol – was the most horrifying moment in both the books and the movies. The combination of Shelob’s massive size and her labyrinth of webs and corpses was enough to make anyone quake with fear.

This giant arachnid then proved to be a worthy adversary for Sam as he attempted to rescue his master. The speed and ferocity of Shelob made this scuffle gripping to watch. Indeed, Sam only just managed to oust this terrifying creature by stabbing it sharply in the abdomen, and whether she survived such a wound still remains a mystery.

Put simply, Shelob was Tolkien’s most terrifying creation. The combination of her gluttony and her nightmarish lair made her a villain that was impossible to forget.
