The Many Saints Of Newark Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

1. The Brutal, Visceral Violence

The Many Saints of Newark
Warner Bros.

Just as the TV show didn't hold back on the brutal violence, neither does the film, though it never treats its many, many kills flippantly or as though they should be glossed over.

The various deaths in this film are absolutely savage for the most part, Taylor typically lingering on the gory outcome but in a way that makes us feel the weight of the act rather than simply leering at the red stuff.

It's clear that murder weighs heavily on the characters no matter their tough exterior, with Dickie in particular becoming increasingly haunted by the bodies he begins piling up.

But perhaps the single most cringe-worthy moment of blood-letting isn't even a killing stroke: it involves a power drill being taken to a poor guy's mouth, the results of which aren't at all shied away from.
