The Matrix Resurrections: 10 Biggest Questions It Leaves Unanswered
9. How Did Morpheus Die?
Surely the biggest bummer in the entire movie is the absence of Laurence Fishburne's Morpheus, replaced with a younger modal alternate created by Neo, and admittedly played with gusto by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
When Neo meets an elderly Niobe (Jada Pinkett Smith), she implies that the original Morpheus is no longer with us, though stops short of actually confirming how he died.
Niobe explains that the Oracle warned Morpheus about the imminent destruction of Zion, but that he believed Neo's sacrifice would protect them from harm.
Evidently that turned out not to be the case, but it's not confirmed that Morpheus actually died as a result of this or not.
Some seem to believe Morpheus died of old age, while others are debating whether or not The Matrix Online is still canon, where he was killed by an assassin while attempting to regain custody of Neo's body.
Given that Resurrections confirms Morpheus was elected to the High Chair of the Zion Council, an event which never happened in The Matrix Online, it's probably fair to assume that the video game has basically been de-canonised now.
It's safest to figure that Morpheus died during Zion's destruction, but it sure would've been nice to know for certain.
