The Matrix Resurrections: 10 Mistakes From The Original Trilogy It Needs To Avoid

8. Leave Agent Smith In The Past

Hugo Weaving's star-making turn as Agent Smith in the first Matrix film made him a household name. Weaving gave the baddie an oily, sinister vibe that alternated between being smarmy and aloofly menacing. Though apparently destroyed by Neo in the first movie, the character made such an impression that the Wachowskis brought him back to be the big bad for the remainder of the trilogy.

Though the game Weaving still owned his signature role, Agent Smith's continued presence in the story made less and less sense as time went on. His ability to multiple himself, while visually cool at the time, ran the character thoroughly into the ground.

Neo confronting the same villain again and again made it seem like the Wachowski's had run out of ideas and were attempting to cash in on past glories. Now that Agent Smith story has been resolved, its time to leave the character in the past.

Weaving has stated he is not returning for Resurrections, but should the character make yet another appearance in the forthcoming sequels, or if it is alluded to that he will make a return, fans could well check out of the new trilogy long before it reaches its conclusion.
