The Matrix Resurrections: 10 Questions We Have From The Trailer

7. Is It A Soft Reboot?

Between this trailer and some of the brief clips teased leading up to its release, the film is evidently going to feature a number of homages to the original Matrix, what with Trinity replicating her daring escape from the start of the original, the new take on the iconic Dojo scene, Neo and Trinity jumping off rooftops, and several other visual nods to what came before.

In a few scant shots we can also see what appears to be the first Matrix film literally projected on the environment, seeming to confirm rumours that The Matrix Resurrections is going to be an extremely meta sequel.

But this all begs the question, is it really going to be more of a "soft-reboot" than a true sequel, setting the stage for a new trilogy of movies that bridges the gap between old and new casts?

Soft reboots and "reboot-sequels" have been all the rage in recent years, and while it often cynically smacks of creative bankruptcy, at least it feels more thematically apt in the case of the Matrix, a series literally defined by cycles of simulated reality.

Hopefully the winks to the original film won't feel excessively fan-serving, because after almost 20 years, many will want something truly fresh rather than a sentimental rehash of what came before.
