The Matrix Resurrections Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

The Matrix is back with a trippy, messy belated sequel.

For many, many years it seemed like a fourth Matrix film was never going to happen, but Hollywood's growing obsession with incessantly rehashing the past in recent years has made The Matrix 4 feel like an increasing inevitability.

And some 18+ years after The Matrix Revolutions wildly polarised critics and fans alike, it rather aptly seems like The Matrix Resurrections is primed to do the same thing.

Anyone expecting more of what the Wachowskis gave us two decades ago is sure to be left beguiled by a sequel that's at once amusingly bold and surprisingly funny, but also lacks clarity and stakes in its wider story.

Few would call this a lazy or safe sequel, but it also falls short in a number of key areas, such that the fanbase is once again sure to be split firmly down the middle.

As an exercise in flipping the bird at Hollywood's cynical unwillingness to bankroll new ideas, this is a fascinating piece of work, albeit one that unfortunately stumbles about as much as it succeeds.

Perhaps more than any other major movie released this year, your mileage may vary...
