The Matrix Theory: The Oracle Told Cypher To Turn On Morpheus

Cypher The Matrix
Warner Bros.

Everything points towards the Oracle having given some misdirection to lead to Cypher turning on Morpheus so that Neo would have to make the choice to go back into the Matrix and face off against Smith and the agents in order for him to learn how to use his powers. Whatever it was the Oracle told Cypher had to have been some cryptic message that would drive him mad trying to figure out the meaning to, and lead him down the path to making a deal with Agent Smith. That was always the Oracle’s intended role for Cypher.

From what we’ve seen of the Oracle, she always gives people a choice. But she also always leads them into making the choice that she wants them to make. Just like she gave Neo two messages in the first film, she gave Cypher two important instructions. The first could have been: If Trinity falls in love with you, then you are the One. The second instruction could have been: You must believe in Morpheus. The prophecy of Trinity not coming true drove him mad, and the instruction to always believe in Morpheus caused him to grow bitter and decide to turn against his teammates.

There you have it. That’s our theory about what the Oracle told Cypher. Think about that next time you jack into The Matrix.
