The Midnight Sky Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

1. It's Insanely Predictable

Without getting into spoiler territory, it's safe to say that any instincts you get about where this movie is going are more than likely to be correct.

And while a film being predictable isn't an inherently terrible thing, the fact that the script wants the audience to be massively surprised by certain last-minute revelations ultimately makes them land a little awkwardly.

The film's grand emotional conceit is likely something viewers will see coming miles away, not to mention an additional reveal which is visually signposted in the movie incredibly early on.

Ultimately you have to wonder why at least one of these rug-pulls had to be a "twist" at all, given how they're exactly what many savvy viewers will totally expect.

Does the predictability derail the film completely? No, but there's a clear chasm between what the script thinks most audience members will figure out and what they actually will.

These issues aside, The Midnight Sky still has enough going for it to be mostly worthwhile. Here's what Clooney gets right...
