The 1999 Mummy may have eventually been part of a three-movie franchise, but it would've also operated just fine as a single movie, because it had few blatant pretentions towards anything bigger.

The new one, though? It's desperately vying for this Dark Universe right out of the gate, so if that never happens due to financial reasons, this is going to end up looking rather silly as a solo venture.

Winner: The original Fraser film actually left people wanting more yet functioned superbly as a one-off, whereas the reboot was arrogantly built as something more from the get-go yet, going by those laughably bad reviews, there won't be much eagerness for more of it.
