The New Mutants won't be launching a new franchise for Disney, but it does hold the honour of being the first superhero movie to feature a true LGBTQ+ relationship between two of its leads. Maisie Williams' Wolfsbane and Blu Hunt's Mirage will embark on a romance here, and both actresses made it clear they were well aware of the responsibility that comes with that.

After Hunt told fans watching the Comic-Con@Home panel that she was nervous about kissing Williams, the Game of Thrones alum added: "In a world of typically masculine superheroes, it was just lovely to see these two fragile women who just protect one another and bring out the light in one another. I think it's important for people to see these types of relationships."

Boone reiterated that point, stating: "Their relationship is certainly the spine of the movie. We wanted to have them be characters that you fell in love with as they fell in love." It's certainly a bold move forward for the genre, but one that's definitely long overdue at this point.
