The Nun Review: 2 Ups & 7 Downs
1. The Eerie Central Locale
As dull and uninteresting as the film ultimately is, the production designers at least deserve some credit for lovingly recreating the Cârța Monastery with total and utter conviction.
From the exterior glimpses of the towering monastery to the ornate interiors, claustrophobic walls, passage-ways and so on, it is most certainly a fitting location to set a movie such as this.
A shame it is, then, that the script does little interesting with it, and Maxime Alexandre's lifeless cinematography fails to make the most of what the production has put together.
Given that the monastery was recreated primarily through location doubling and shooting on a sound stage, it's impressive how totally seamless the results are, especially on a fairly modest $22 million budget.
