The Nun Review: 2 Ups & 7 Downs

2. The Rock Solid Cast

The Nun
New Line Cinema

The main reason this movie was so promising in the first place was the presence of great actors like Taissa Farmiga and Demián Bichir.

Farmiga, whose older sister Vera of course plays Lorraine Warren in the Conjuring films, is giving it her all as the petrified yet determined Sister Irene, and clearly deserved a far better movie to lend her talents.

Oscar nominee Bichir, meanwhile, is typically solid as her companion, Father Burke. His distinctive vocal tenor makes the most of the largely sloppy dialogue, and at times he just barely prevents ennui from setting in.

As already mentioned, Jonas Bloquet does good work but is saddled with some bone-headed comic relief, while Bonnie Aarons is again appropriately horrifying as The Nun.

Brilliant Northern Irish actor Michael Smiley also shows up for literally a few seconds near the start of the movie, in what's nothing if not a colossal waste of his splendid talents.
