The Nun Review: 2 Ups & 7 Downs

3. The Wildly Unnecessary Comic Relief

The Nun Maurice
Warner Bros.

The character of Maurice (Jonas Bloquet) aka "Frenchie" has been mysteriously kept out of most of The Nun's marketing, despite him having a significant amount of screen time and effectively being the third protagonist.

Though Bloquet does fine enough with what he has, Frenchie is mostly written to be mild comic relief, dropping not-so-witty quips just when things might actually be getting, you know, scary.

The one-liners often diffuse the tension and steer the movie closer to being straight-up schlock rather than the "classy" horror flick it clearly thinks it is otherwise.

Bloquet plays well during his more serious moments fending off the supernatural entities haunting the Cârța Monastery, but the tone-derailing nature of his comedic quips are a major scripting fail.
